Memorial Tribute
to
Dr. Larry Planchard
Larry was born in New Orleans on October 21, 1976, an eighth generation Louisianan, and passed away June 12, 2007, following a sudden illness. He moved to Shreveport at age 2, and although he had lived in several other cities during his academic career, he considered Shreveport his home and the place where he wished to settle.
Larry graduated from Louisiana School of Math, Science and the Arts in Natchitoches in 1994, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from Washington University in St. Louis in 1998. Following in his father's footsteps, he attended Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans and received his Medical Degree in 2002. He completed a general surgery internship at Tulane University Health Science Center in 2003, and a residency in Ophthalmology at LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans in 2007.
He was a terrific surgeon for his level of experience and an outstanding Ophthalmology resident. The LSU/Oschner Department of Ophthalmology Residents Day Award was named in memory of Larry.
He was a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and a member-in-training of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Throughout his life Larry was known for his love of learning and his inquiring mind. From interest in physics and cold fusion to his thirst for knowledge of history, Larry sought to know more about a wide range of topics. An avid reader, he always had something to add to the conversation no matter how esoteric the topic. His extraordinary mind was complemented by a sensitive, artistic nature. He loved music, was an accomplished model builder, a painter and a private pilot. Among his continuing academic goals was his desire to obtain, in the future, a doctorate in history. All who knew Larry appreciated his loving spirit, fierce loyalty, wry wit and wonderful sense of humor.
During his pre-med and medical school years, Larry worked many summers at Bossier Ophthalmology Clinic. He was excited about returning to Shreveport-Bossier and intended to practice Ophthalmology with his father beginning in July, only a few weeks after his untimely passing.
