TECNIS® Intraocular Lens
The only treatment for cataracts today is to remove the cataract and replace it with a clear artificial lens known as an intraocular lens (IOL). The TECNIS® IOL is approved by the FDA to improve functional vision, which is likely to provide a meaningful safety benefit for older drivers. Our eyes, like other parts of our body, actually fall out of balance with age. When we're young, the eye's two focusing lenses, the cornea (outer lens of the eye) and natural crystalline lens, actually work together to focus light onto the retina. As we age, the natural lens loses some of its ability to balance the cornea, resulting in vision that it is not quite as crisp as it used to be. The TECNIS lens is designed to restore this balance to a level more like that of a healthy person in their 20s.
While most IOLs are made with a rounded surface, the TECNIS IOL was developed through advanced wavefront modeling of human corneas. The modified lens surface works with the cornea in a way that more closely resembles the balance of a natural lens and cornea of a younger person. The result is improved functional vision after cataract surgery.

While traditional lens implants may improve your vision, only the TECNIS lens improves functional vision as was shown clinically in night driving simulator testing. Based on these test results, the TECNIS IOL is likely to provide a meaningful safety benefit for older drivers and the drivers and pedestrians with whom they share the road.
